Catalogo Monete Nomisma 2025-2026
Dear Collectors and Colleagues,
Here is the fifth edition of our catalog of Italian coins. Once again, we have aimed to enrich, refine, and perfect it to better meet the needs of the modern collectors’ market.
In the previous edition, we mentioned how difficult it is to propose balanced and accurate coin valuations, as every auction is a unique event where new records can be achieved. It is no surprise, therefore, that the number of auction houses has grown over the past two years.
First of all, we confirm the positive trend of “significant” prices for the rarest and best-preserved coins, while weaker valuations are observed for lower-quality or more common coins. However, it is worth noting that the market (especially online) is so robust that even common coins or those in low to medium condition can still find buyers.
The market is increasingly divided between wealthy and demanding collectors who compete for the finest and rarest coins, and beginners and younger collectors seeking common and medium-to-low-quality coins. On this note, I am pleased to highlight the generational renewal noticeable, especially in auctions. As reflected in our catalog prices, there has been a slowdown in low-grade coins from the Kingdom of Italy. Another key factor impacting the market is the incredible rise in gold and silver prices.
Turning to the catalog itself, we must highlight the comprehensive revision of valuations based on my personal experience, consultations with numerous colleagues, and meticulous analysis of public auctions. These auctions have been examined with painstaking patience, attention, and expertise by Roberto Finotti.
There are many new features, large and small, which we hope our readers will appreciate.
At this point, I must underscore the refinement work carried out by Pietro Magliocca in the chapter dedicated to Neapolitan coinage, covering the medieval period through the 19th century. In recent years, coins from this period have attracted many new collectors, significantly energizing the market.
The papal coinage section has been entirely revised, including the chapter on Pope Pius VI, to which we have added a section dedicated to the “Madonnine” and “Sampietrini,” coins minted in provincial mints at the end of his pontificate and during the years of the Roman Republic. This was a brief yet highly complex numismatic period that has recently attracted new collectors fascinated by the challenge of research. We hope that our work will serve as a reliable guide for building a collection of this kind.
A major new addition is the chapter on the coinage of King Zogu of Albania. Traditionally well-followed in Italy, as nearly all the coins were minted at the Rome mint, it has experienced growing popularity in recent years, with rising valuations. We believe this carefully priced section will spark keen interest and serve as a reference tool for the market.
I would also like to thank my passionate colleagues Simone Cavazzola, Roberto Finotti, Lorenzo Bellesia, and the renowned collectors Pietro Magliocca and Nuredin Malecka for their support and assistance.
A special thanks goes to Marzia Lanzoni for her professionalism and immense patience throughout the months we devoted to creating this catalog.
Finally, I would like to thank all attentive collectors who wish to report errors, omissions, or imperfections, as well as provide new reliable information, photographs, or anything else that could improve this work, designed for all enthusiasts of coins, numismatics in general, and Italian history.
Numismatics is a science, but for me, it has always been a great passion to share. I wish you an enjoyable read, study, and exploration of this field, which has always brought me great joy.
